Discover how to use visual supports to help people with autism
Dear parent,
Do you sometimes feel support for autistic parents is minimal?...like life coping with an autistic child, young person or adult is one long, stress- filled struggle from first thing in the morning to last thing at night?
Do you sometimes wish for more support for autistic parents allowing you to take part in the same activities that other parents do with their children, *without* the constant worry that your child will may become aggressive, have a melt down or begin to behave "inappropriately" in public?
Are you consumed by worry about what's happening every time your autistic child is out of your site, even for a moment?
It's hardly surprising. The truth is, even the most loving and dedicated parent can feel exhausted and stressed out from the constant challenges of coping with an autistic child!
But what if there was support for autistic parents and you could feel confident that your child would behave perfectly while out in public, and rest easy knowing that he was well-behaved, calm, and cooperative when you weren't around?
What if you had appropriate autism techniques and hints to help give support for autistic parents when coping with an autistic child.
What if I were to help you discover how to use visual supports to help people with autism?
Hello, my name is Janine, and I can help!
I first began working with people with disabilities over twenty years ago.
Since then I have worked with many different abilities and in many different settings.
I now work predominantly with autistic children and young people in schools and with their families providing support for autistic parents.
...And in this time I've learned a lot about various autism techniques and hints to help autistic children and adults learn social skills such as autism and finding friends, as well as control and manage behaviors.
For example do they...
Yell, scream, or shout?
Sometimes become violent?
Hit out at you or others?
Become unmanageable when routine changes?
Act inappropriately in public,
embarrassing you?
... These problems aren't uncommon!
As you know, autistic children don't always view the world as we do, and can often be overwhelmed by noises, sensations, and activities that the rest of us think of as "everyday" or "normal" even simple activities for example autism play social skills, or autism and finding friends.
How to use visual supports to help people with autism
Social skill stories and pecs schedule for autistic kids are excellent tools for teaching social skills to autistic individuals.
Social skills stories provide the autistic individual with accurate information about those situations and activities they may find difficult or confusing; for example autism play social skills, autism and finding friends or personal space and boundaries and social skills and autism.
The social skills story gives focus to the main points and describes in detail both by written text and visually with images or pictures the event or skill being mastered.
It will also give focus to the key skill being taught like autism play social skills describing the actions expected of them and the actions they can expect from others.
The goal of autism social stories is to make the autistic person more comfortable in situations and give them coping mechanisms for those situations they struggle with such as autism and finding friends.

Results Expected From Reading
Social Stories...
You may find the autistic person will consider these printable social stories their favorites.
And because they get
read so often, you may want to leave them lying around so the
autistic person can look at and read them whenever they want or need
too.
This allows the autistic individual the opportunity to re-enforce the social skills, and keep reminding themselves of appropriate behaviors and responses.
Of course, that said, the overall effectiveness of any social skills story should be monitored.
At first a story should be reviewed once a day, to make sure the right story is being implemented. However, you may find, especially during the first few days of reading a new story your autistic child, teen or adult will want to continually read the story.
This is natural as autistic people like repetition.
You should allow this as it will re-enforce the story in their mind.
If after a week or two of working with a particular story there is little or no change, the story should be looked at and either tweaked or re-worded...
Or perhaps you should consider whether another social story is needed?
Is the story addressing the problem? Or is there something else affecting their behavior like a new baby or other stimuli?
Has a routine changed? Are they learning something new at school? Are they mastering a new skill?
These things can all have an impact on autistic people and their behavior, which can usually be addressed with social skills stories.
